The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced new safety requirements for button batteries and coin batteries to decrease the risk of ingestion by children 6 years or younger. The new requirements were put in place per the requirements of Reese’s Law, approved on August 16, 2022. The final rule consists of two Federal Register notices: one incorporating the 2023 version of the voluntary standard UL 4200A as the federal mandatory rule (the adoption of 16 CFR 1263), and the other introducing additional packaging requirements for button and coin batteries not covered by UL 4200A.

Manufacturers of household products powered by button/coin cell batteries (excluding toys, which are already covered under ASTM F963 Toy Safety Standard) should prepare for compliance with the host of new construction, performance, labeling, and certification requirements to ensure compliance before the effective date.
